CUT SHAPES NOT CULTURE +

This project marks an early stage in the development of a distinct visual language and approach to image-making. While still exploratory, it reflects the foundations of a visual identity that would continue to develop through later work.

The brief invited the creation of either a perzine or a brand-led zine, taking inspiration from the brand TSPTR, whose visual identity draws heavily from themes of American counterculture and subcultural storytelling. In response, the project took the form of a perzine centred around electronic dance culture and its surrounding visual and musical communities.

The publication explored themes of youth culture, music, identity, and subcultural expression through a raw and experimental visual approach, reflecting the independent and radical nature traditionally associated with zine-making. Initial inspiration developed through an interest in music-making and the role of instruments and sound in shaping personal and collective identity. From this starting point, the project evolved into an exploration of music-led subculture and the visual energy connected to electronic dance scenes.
